The category of India Pale Ale - or IPA for short - is very diverse. Roughly speaking, one can distinguish between English IPAs and American IPAs. English IPAs are generally more malty and have a more equal balance between malt and hops. The American style has a stronger hop character thanks to the mostly very aromatic American hop varieties. The American style IPA has overtaken the classic English IPA in terms of popularity. On the shelf and in the tap, you come across far more American-style IPAs than English-style IPAs. That's why we - like leading organisations such as the BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) - base the style description on American IPA.
